We’re celebrating Septic Smart Week with the US Environmental Protection Agency from September 18-22. A few tips on the proper care and maintenance of septic systems are outlined below. These are applicable to community sewer systems, too!
Don’t Overload the Commode! The toilet is not a trash can. Although it can seem that whatever you flush just disappears, many things can wreak havoc on a septic or sewer system. That’s why, you should never flush things like diapers, wipes, feminine hygiene products, or cat litter. Doing so can result in major damage to your system and expensive repair bills.
Think at the sink! What you put down the drain also has a big impact on your septic system. Things like fatty goods, cooking oils and greases can cause massive build-ups and blockages in your pipes. Again, this will result in damage to your system and costs that you may not have planned for.
What are some of your tips for taking care of you septic or sewer systems?
