Clean water is essential for drinking, and improperly treated wastewater can introduce harmful contaminants into natural water bodies. By regularly analyzing key indicators such as chemical composition, microbial presence, and pollutant levels, ASUS identifies risks early, ensures regulatory compliance, and maintains safe water systems. Our public water systems provide consistent, safe water, and we take rigorous steps to monitor quality.
Water Quality
ASUS is dedicated to producing drinking water that meets all state and federal standards. We continually strive to adopt new methods for delivering the best quality drinking water to the military installations we serve. As new challenges to drinking water safety emerge, we remain vigilant in meeting the goals of source water protection, water conservation, and community education, while continuing to meet the needs of our water users.
Our Water Quality Reports, also known as Consumer Confidence Reports, are published every year by June 30. The Safe Drinking Water Act requires water systems to send an annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) to customers, detailing water quality, sources, and detected contaminants. You can view these reports in the above Water Quality Reports section. If you have a concern, please feel free to contact us.
Contaminants of Emerging Concern
Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) are unregulated, often man-made chemicals (e.g., PFAS, pharmaceutical, personal care products, microplastics, pesticides) that pose potential, long-term threats to human health or the environment. Knowledge about these chemicals is still in its infancy, and the levels at which they might become a threat are not well understood. ASUS continuously monitors the CECs through EPA's Unregulated Contaminate Monitoring Rule (UCMR) and is taking proactive action to eliminate contaminants such as PFAS.
Lead and Copper Awareness
ASUS is actively working to reduce lead exposure in our water systems for the installations we serve. We are partnering with key stakeholders at each of our installations to go above and beyond EPA's requirements by tracking additional components and materials in our service lines that may contain traces of lead. In addition to our corrosion control methods and robust sampling plans, we are implementing an aggressive replacement program which exceeds the EPA's requirements for identification and replacement with the goal of continuing to provide safe and reliable drinking water to all residents and base personnel.

- For all public water systems served by ASUS, public education notice is posted on our website.
- In addition to the above activities, we implement at least three activities from those listed below to provide public education information on lead.

PFAS Awareness
PFAS are widely used, long-lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time. Because of their widespread use and their persistence in the environment, many PFAS are found in the blood of people and animals all over the world and are present at low levels in a variety of food products and in the environment. PFAS are found in water, air, fish, and soil at locations across the nation and the globe. Scientific studies have shown that exposure to some PFAS in the environment may be linked to harmful health effects in humans and animals.
In April 2024, EPA finalized a critical rule to designate two widely used PFAS – PFOA and PFOS – as hazardous substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act. In addition, EPA issued the first-ever national, legally enforceable drinking water standard to protect communities from exposure to harmful PFAS – establishing Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for six PFAS in drinking water.
The final rule requires:
- Public water systems must monitor for these PFAS and have three years to complete initial monitoring (by 2027), followed by ongoing compliance monitoring. Water systems must also provide the public with information on the levels of these PFAS in their drinking water beginning in 2027.
- Public water systems have until 2029 to implement solutions that reduce these PFAS if monitoring shows that drinking water levels exceed these MCLs.
- Beginning in 2029, public water systems that have PFAS in drinking water which violates one or more of these MCLs must take action to reduce levels of these PFAS in their drinking water and must provide notification to the public of the violation.

Wastewater Quality
A healthy wastewater system is vital for public health, environmental protection, and sustainability. It prevents waterborne diseases by removing pathogens, bacteria, and chemicals from sewage before releasing water back into the ecosystem, preventing algal blooms and oxygen-depleted "dead zones." Furthermore, it enables water reuse, resource recovery, and prevents infrastructure failures. ASUS is dedicated to improving our wastewater collection system performance and protecting our resources from unauthorized discharges through strategic upgrades and diligent maintenance. We provide the Public Works/Civil Engineering Departments reports of our overall performance as a wastewater collection system, highlighting the improvements we have made and our commitment to maintaining and upgrading the system that serves you.
